A Makeup Clear-out – Winter 2019

I love makeup. I love playing around with it, I love buying it, and I love swatching it all over my hands in stores.

Sometimes however, I buy something that I end up not really getting on with as well as I thought I would, and then that product tends to disappear into the back of my makeup collection, until one day I realize that I have a bunch of things that I don’t even love, and I decide to throw it all out.

A few weeks ago was one of those days, and I though before I threw all this stuff out, I would take some photos of it all and share on the internet why I am getting rid of these things. So here we are.

Starting with lip products, as I feel like I am most addicted to buying those, and also I tend to buy a bad one most often. The first lipstick I am getting rid of is a Sisley one in L23. I absolutely love this colour, and the formula is fine as well. However, I feel like there is something in this lipstick that massively dries out my lips, to the point where every time I use this my lips are dry and cracked a few days after. It honestly makes me sad, but I just can’t wear this colour and therefor there is no reason for me to keep it.
A lipstick that I had high hopes for, but turned out to be not so great, is the Essence Insta-Care lipstick in 01 Sandy Sunrise. I used to have a similar product from Essence that I loved to death but they don’t sell it anymore, and when I saw this I got really excited because I thought it was the same thing in a different packaging. And the formula is the same, so yay, but the colour is a little more.. I don’t know. It just doesn’t work for me as well as the one I had previously, it makes me look a bit dull and grey and makes my teeth look yellow, which is not a look I’m very much into. So sadly, another one I am throwing out.

A product that I knew would probably be a fail when I bought it, is the Hema Metallic Lip Gloss is 04 Shimmering Scarlet, which is, as the name suggests, a glittery red lip gloss. Very cute in theory, but really, when did I think I would wear this? I don’t have parties where I would were this to, I am pretty sure I wore this twice for photos but never ever in real life. Don’t get me wrong, it’s honestly a beautiful gloss. It’s comfortable, it lasts well and it also looks really cool, but it’s not really something I wear, so there’s no point keeping this.
Something again that I find myself not reaching for, is the Hema Matt Lip Cream in 04 Wine. I love this formula, and I do also love the colour, but for some reason this applies patchy, where my other ones are perfectly fine and even. With a dark colour like this even the tiniest patch of uneven colour is very much visible, so I don’t ever wear this. And if I don’t wear it, it gots to go.
And lastly on the lip product front, something that is quite honestly a pretty bad product. This Hema lip liner came in a set with a liquid lipstick, and the colours were pretty terrible. They didn’t match at all, like not even close, and they just looked bad together. I threw out the lipstick a while ago, but held on to the liner because I though I might wear it with another lipstick. I haven’t worn this once, and when I tried it during the clear-out I realised it doesn’t even really look good on me, so now this is going as well.

Another category that I could declutter a bit, was brows. I feel like I’ve found my holy grail brow products, so everything else can pretty much go. The first thing is an old favourite, with the emphasis on “old”. I love the Hema brow gel in 03 Dark Brown, but it has been in my collection a long time and I find myself not really reaching for it anymore, so I feel like I can throw this out. I do think I might want to get a new brow gel, but if I do I’d like to try something new, so if you have any recommendations please let me know!

Another very old favourite is the Hema brow pencil in 09. I don’t know why this was still in my collection, as it was almost gone and it is very very old. This is another product that I have repurchased many times, until I decided to try something new. It is a product I would recommend, as it is cheap and pretty good, but I love my H&M pencil so much more so I don’t think this will make it back into my collection.

A brow product that I didn’t love is another Hema one. What can I say, I generally like their products. But this one not so much. It’s the B.A.E. Brow Wonder fill & define pencil in 04 Deep and eh? Not great. The colour didn’t really match my brows properly, the tip isn’t as fine and thin as I would like, the brush is annoying. I like the fact that it’s vegan, but that is really all. This needs to go.

The last category that I decluttered is face products. I tend to not buy a whole lot of face products, I stick to what I like, but sometimes I can’t help myself, and sometimes it ends up not working out.

The first product is the Catrice Nude Illusion transparent loose powder, and I didn’t not like this, but I also didn’t love it. I feel like loose powder is just too much of a hassle for me, I way prefer compact powders as I can take them with me without it getting all messy and making my bag look like I’m on drugs. I have used it for quite a while though, so I wouldn’t say it’s a bad product, it just wasn’t for me.
The other face powder I am saying goodbye to is the Revolution Vivid baked highlighter in Golden Lights, and one that I actually loved for a long time, but I feel like it is not really my style anymore and I don’t ever reach for it. Although now, as I’m writing this, I just swatched it as it is really freaking pretty. I’m tempted to keep it, but I shouldn’t. The packaging is broken and I am not in love with the big(ish) glitters in it. I might look for a replacement though, with less glitter and better packaging. Because this really is pretty freaking beautiful on the face.

I am getting rid of one brush, this little travel size powder brush. I used to use this for concealer or highlighter, but I’ve got brushes that I prefer for that and I tend to not really love travel size brushes, so this can go. I believe this was from Etos, but I’m not 100% sure.

A product that was a pretty big fail for me, was the MUA Pro/Base full coverage concealer. I bought this in a darker colour, thinking I could use it as a liquid shape type of product, but it just makes my face look dirty instead of nice and shaped, so it didn’t really work out. I might have to just get an actual shaping product. It might work perfect as a concealer, but I haven’t tried it that way.
And the last thing I am saying goodbye to is the Hema under eye concealer in 80 Light. Honestly, I can’t even remember what my thoughts were on this product, so obviously it wasn’t mind blowingly awesome. I do believe it was pretty orange on me, which is never a good look, and I know for sure that there are concealers that I love more. I feel like overall Hema face products haven’t worked out for me (but I love their brow stuff mostly), and I am pretty sure this one was the same.

I feel like I have gotten rid of a good amount of products. I still have a bunch in my collection, and I will probably do some posts about my makeup collection over the winter, but now it’s all products that I love and enjoy using.

Thanks for stopping by ❤
