Our trip to Canada is getting closer and closer, and I starting to make lists of what I want to do, see and buy.
Who am I kidding? I started making lists as soon as we had decided we were going. But now that it’s only a little while away, I thought I would share some of the things we want to do and some of the things I am hoping to buy whilst I’m over there. My sister-in-law – who we’re staying with – already sent me a list of fun things we could do, and of course I did some googling myself as well.
And also whilst I’m there I need to take advantage of all the shops we don’t have here in the Netherlands and buy everything that my heart desires. Or at least what fits in my suitcase and budget…
To do. To see.
One of the things we are for sure going to do, is spent a few days in Calgary. G’s sister already booked an apartment for a few nights, and I am so excited. As far as I know we plan on exploring the city one day, and drive to Banff at least once as well to visit the National Park. And then what we’ll do the rest of the time we’re over there (I believe we’re going for 3 days) I don’t know yet, but I’m sure it will be great.
One thing I would love to do, but I don’t know if we can, is visit the Muttart Conservatory, the Botanical Gardens in Edmonton. They are the glass pyramids that pop up in the very first photo you see when you google Edmonton, and they are supposed to be beautiful. I mean, the whole building just looks so cool on the outside, and from what I’ve seen in photos it is just as beautiful inside. The only problem is that the conservatory will close for renovation in July 2019, so I hope we’ll be able to go before that time.
Staying with the nature theme, another thing I would love to do is visit the River Valley, some sort of massive park right in the middle of the city. Apparently there are lots of activities you can do there, gorgeous hikes, and I’ve seen photos of the River Valley Stairs, some steep stairway in the park thing, with a beautiful view. I don’t know where they are, or what they are exactly, but I would love to visit.
My sister-in-law wants to take us to Elk Island, which is I believe another national park close to Edmonton. A place with gorgeous hikes and apparently a lot of wildlife, I would love to go there as well. She also mentioned Mill Creek Ravin, with even more hikes and an open air pool. Basically, we want to do all the hikes and national parks and beautiful nature things.
We would also love to go somewhere with a nice view over the city. I read something about the End Of The World or Keillor Point, a beautiful look out point outside of the city. If we can find it, I would absolutely love to visit.
Some not very specific things I – we – would love to do is just walk around the city. My sister-in-law mentioned some lovely coffee shops and lunch places, cute farmers markets, she asked me to go to Zumba with her. Just explore the city, see what it has to offer. Take our time, that’s what I want to do.
And lastly, if you visit Edmonton, there is one thing that I think you just have to do. I mean, I obviously have never been there, so I don’t know if it is actually a must see, but I feel like it is. What am I talking about? The West Edmonton Mall. It is apparently the biggest mall in North America, or was at one point, and I just need to see it, and walk around, and shop there. I have had a little look on the website, and it has 3 floors + a basement. It has a water park inside, an amusement park, a deep sea adventure lake, themed streets, food courts, an ice skating ring, hotels, bowling alleys, a movie theater and lots and lots and lots of stores. And I just want to go there.
Can’t go to North America without a little wish list of things you want to get whilst over there.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way, I want to get some souvenirs. A fridge magnet definitely, we’ve really been enjoying buying one from each place we go. I also want to get a postcard and write down some of the highlights from the trip, as a little memory for the future. And then of course I’m going to look for something small for my friends and family. I don’t know if I’ll find anything, but we’ll see.
High on my list is a practical thing, I want to find some flipflops. The ones I have currently are very worn out and I need to replace them, so I thought I’d go look for some in Canada.
I am on the hunt for a few jewelry pieces, why not look for them in Canada? First of all, I want a gold pinky ring, I absolutely love the look of that and am currently wearing a super cheap not so great quality one. I am going to keep my eye out for a nicer one in Canada. I also maybe want some gold earrings, both studs and bigger hoops that I can wear on a (almost) daily basis. I’m sure I won’t find all of these, but I am going to have a look.
Another thing I’ve had on my wish list for a while now and am hoping to find whilst in Canada, is a flowy button-up blouse that can be worn both casual and professional. Something black or darker coloured probably although I am not 100% sure yet on the colour. I think I would prefer a silk or cotton one, preferably not a synthetic fabric. We’ll see what I come across, if anything.
And then, as apparently I am working my way through the things I’ve been wanting for a while, I also want to look for a blazer, either tan or black. I don’t know if this is a super realistic piece to look for whilst overseas, as a blazer might take up too much space in my suitcase, but I just want to see what I can find. If I find the absolute most perfect one, I’ll just make it work.
I definitely want to have a look in Sephora. Do I need anything there? No but I just want to have a look, see if there is anything really fun and exciting I suddenly have to have. There are so many brands we can’t easily get here in the Netherlands, it would be a waste not to at least have a look. I might look for some new makeup brushes, I do kind of need those.
The one thing that I am definitely 100% going to get is books. All. The. Books. I am so excited to browse the (secondhand?) bookstores in Edmonton and Calgary, maybe find some Agatha Christie books or something entirely new to me. Maybe something really beautiful, I love beautiful books! I also think I could get a really cool photo in a cute secondhand bookstore, two birds with one stone right? Hehe.
But mostly I just want to browse. See what I can find that I fall in love with and can bring home with me (which isn’t much probably). I want to explore the cities that we’ll visit and experience the beautiful nature and just have fun, spent time with my boyfriend and his sister and her little family. Relax. Get inspired. Take lots of photos and make even more memories.
I am so grateful that I am – we are – able to go to Canada, and I am so excited to travel and explore!
Have you ever been to Edmonton or Calgary, or Canada in general? What’s your favourite place to visit in the world?
